Frequently asked questions

How do i know when my clutch needs replacing?

Many clutches are operated mechanically and can be adjusted. A hydraulically operated clutch is self adjusting and you only know that you need to replace it when you go to drive off and the engine revs up and you don't go very fast.

What do i do when my engine management light comes on?

It means a fault has been logged in the engine management system, which will need to be downloaded and read at a garage with diagnostic equipment

When does my car need an MOT?

It is your responsibility to ensure that your vehicle is examined every 12 months. Without an MoT certificate, you will be unable to renew your road tax and your car may not be insured. Having a current MoT certificate is also a legal requirement in the UK. You can have your vehicle MoT tested up to 28 days in advance of its due date..

Do i have to get my car serviced by a main dealer?

The European regulations governing the sale and after-sales servicing of new cars changed in October 2003. For new cars purchased after that date you are no longer obliged during the warranty period to get the car serviced by a franchise dealer. You must however continue to get the car serviced according to the manufacturer's recommended schedule and criteria using only manufacturer approved parts.

When should i have my cambelt changed?

This varies on every car, a typical length of time that a timing belt should last is between 60,000 miles or 6 years, whichever comes first. For an expert opinion you should contact your local garage and ask them when the timing belt is due to be replaced on your particular car.
